It's often a battle of wills, not skills.

You have to expect everything of yourself before you can do them.

From Letters To Colors
For years our teams have been differentiated by letters. The A, B, C teams were a practical way of scheduling for tournaments, and a way to indicate that each team was at a different level talent wise. More and more that lettering system has bothered some players, especially the youngest ones. So we’re going to move to colors instead that will accomplish the same goals without the school grades’ feel of A, B,& C. Now the teams will be Green, Gold, and White in the same order for tryouts as A, B, & C previously were.

Fencor Coaches
Just a short thank you to all the men and women who; took all the time necessary, gave up all that family and even vacation time, planned all those practices, went to all those tournaments, listened to all those excuses for missing all those planned practices, put up with all those bad refs’ calls at all those tournaments, cared so much about each player, tried so hard to be positive in critiquing the players, and loved practically every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!

Fencor prides itself on the quality of volunteer coaches we have. Not that each one is perfect all the time but overall there is a lot of basketball taught, team building done, individual improvement and positive relationships built. On average between 2 practices a week and about 7 tournaments per team, the coach spends a minimum of 120 hours with the team, not counting any travel, planning, phone calls, ‘wondering’ time, tryouts, and meetings. Somewhere all this fits the definition of commitment. Thanks!

Passing the Torch, ahh, I Mean Mouse
For years, Jesse Jaslow has been doing our website and was the original creator of all the neat graphics, pictures, etc. Because of some significant health issues, Jesse is unable to continue with this project. We thank her for all her service and commitment to Fencor over the years.

When we put out an SOS, Jack Darcy, who is a friend of Kevin Collins -a Fencor coach-, stepped up and offered to take over. Jack has been great playing catch up and creating a new spirit and design of our website. He has really taken personal ownership and you can tell by the results….with more to come. He’s a big picture guy- literally and figuratively, as you can tell and we’d like to build on that. We’re thinking about things like ongoing updates after each tournament, pictures of tryouts and games that you can submit, a “Fencor History” page that would take a look back at the first 15 years of our organization. You can contact Jack directly jackdarcy@comcast.net with ideas, pictures, information or you can send it to fencor@fencor.org.

Working On Your Self Confidence
by Dr. Elisabeth Slator

A Former 2-sport D-I Athlete

Have you ever found yourself on the free throw line, with no time left on the clock and your team down by one? If you have, you might recall the nervous excitement that can accompany being placed in a pressure situation. Do you remember what you were thinking? What about how your body felt? Do you remember whether or not you made those crucial free throws? Chances are, if you have been playing basketball for any length of time, you have been faced with a situation similar to this. If you haven’t, you can rest assured that it won’t be long before you are. No matter what kind of pressure situation you are placed in, it is the way in which you feel about it that is the most important factor. For some people, having the outcome of the game rest on their shoulders may be anxiety-provoking, while others may see it as a wonderful and exciting challenge. What makes players feel so differently about the same situation is the amount of confidence each has in her ability when asked to perform “under fire”. It follows, then, that all athletes should spend a few minutes considering what can be done in order to enhance one’s confidence. After all, you spend hours in the gym practicing your shot, why wouldn’t you decide to work on your self-confidence as well?

The following suggestions for improving self-confidence are proven tips and techniques utilized by some of the worlds most successful athletes.

1) Think confidently- a positive attitude is essential for reaching your potential. If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts (e.g. I can’t believe I just got beat to the basket, I can’t keep up with this girl!), immediately stop yourself and replace them with positive ones. These replacement thoughts should be motivational and instructional (e.g. I can do this. I just need to keep my butt down and shuffle my feet). In this way, you are encouraging yourself and focusing on the specific athletic skill that you need to improve.

2) Act confident, even when you don’t feel it. There is an old saying, “Fake it ‘til you make it”. In other words, the more confident you act, the more confident you will eventually feel. Displaying confidence at all times is especially important because you lose your competitive edge when your opponent sees your confidence deflate. Next time you start to experience that nagging sense of self-doubt on the court, hold your head up high, relax your facial muscles, and roll your shoulders back. Before you know it, you will be feeling every bit as strong and self- assured as you appear.

3) Use mental imagery- Envision yourself doing things well or completing difficult tasks that you have previously been unable to do. Imagining a successful outing will evoke the feelings and sensations that accompany a winning performance and this will help place you in the proper mindset to perform at your best.

4) Prepare, prepare, prepare- whether it’s physical preparation and conditioning, having an efficient technical strategy, or planning for all possible game-related scenarios, the more prepared you are when entering a contest, the more likely it is that you will meet with success.

Remember, successful behavior increases confidence and leads to further successful behavior. If you act and think confidently, use mental imagery and optimize your physical conditioning and preparation, you will be on your way to peak performance in no time. Who knows, maybe you will even wind up as a hero in the process!

The New A.D.D.
AAU has come up with a new Age Determination Date- the birth date that sets which age group a player may tryout for. That chart is below. After careful consideration including feedback from our coaches, parents, and players, ideas from other clubs, and thoughtful consideration the following is how Fencor will handle this change: we will follow the new dates in all age groups EXCEPT for those players that played in the high school age groups during the 2007 AAU season i.e. last year’s 14’s,15’s, & 16’s. These players will have a choice between this year’s dates or last year’s.

The reasoning for the exception is that many of these players have been with the same group for 3 or 4 years and, more importantly, in high school basketball, players are always competing against older players in very different grades.

The overwhelming majority of clubs will be following the new A.D.D and therefore all the clubs will be competing on a level playing field. The coaches for each age group are not set yet and this decision is being made no matter who is coaching which age group. There will be some adjustments for the players with teammates and coaches, but we hope that will be minor and this often occurs often in the younger ages every year. There will be no exceptions in the younger age groups.

When you sign up for registration, please just fill in the date and refer to the chart for determining which age group your daughter should be in.

New ADD (Age Determining Date) Divisions:

  •   9's - born between July 1, 1997 & June 30, 1998
  • 10's - born between July 1, 1996 & June 30, 1997
  • 11's - born between July 1, 1995 & June 30, 1996
  • 12's - born between July 1, 1994 & June 30, 1995
  • 13's - born between July 1, 1993 & June 30, 1994
  • 14's - born between July 1, 1992 & June 30, 1993
  • 15's - born between July 1, 1991 & June 30, 1992
  • 16/17's - Junior Eligible if you are 16 or 17 as of December 31, 2007 and a junior in high school (no change from last year)
  • All players that played with a U14 team or older in the 2007 AAU season may move up with their team or follow the new ADD
  • This choice must be made BEFORE tryouts and you should show up for the appropriate tryout
Confused? Ask yourself this question. What age team does her birthday qualify her to tryout for?

E-mail Blasts
To better communications whenever we can, we will ask you to put one or two PARENTAL e-mails on this year’s registration so that we can send urgent and/or informative e-mails to the whole group of PARENTS. We will send these in such a way so that no one else will have the e-mail addresses. Fencor never sells names, addresses and/or phone numbers of those that are a part of Fencor. By the way, we do NOT want the kids’ email addresses. Thanks for your help.
