| FENCOR AND NATIONALS |
|
Each AAU club has a different view of the value of their teams going to the National AAU
Championships at either the Division I or II level. Some well known clubs don't allow any of their
teams to participate, others allow only teams 13 year old and above to go. Still, others won't
allow any of their teams to compete at the D-II Nationals. Some teams will only go if the location
seems attractive.
At Fencor we hold strongly to the belief that every team that can go to Nationals should go
(although some teams that have qualified don't go for understandable reasons). We have believed
that and acted accordingly since the club started almost 20 years ago. The "why" is
found in our mission statement and history. If parts of Fencor's mission are to "have fun,
learn to compete, and grow as an individual" then the Nationals experience can be a big part
of accomplishing all three. Ask someone that's gone. From Opening Ceremonies to seeing teams from
all across the nation to traveling with your teammates are all fun, growth, and educational
experiences. Part of the sacrifice that the coaches and parents make is in order to create memories
for the players. That's always been an important goal and Nationals can be a strong memory maker.
All good players naturally want to see how they stack up against the best - the best are always at
Nationals. For the older teams the ‘college exposure’ piece will be important as well.
Some clubs don't go because they say they can't win there. It's easy for Fencor to ignore that
statement because we've had numerous 'Sweet 16' finishes over the years and are now blessed with
two exceptional teams - the 3 rd place 14's and the National Champion 15's. But the club has had
just as many teams not get out of their pool as did and the benefits to the players can be just as
great no matter where you finish.
It is fair to expect that if you are on a Fencor team, the club will do what it can to encourage
that team to participate in Nationals every time you qualify including obtaining costly and hard to find extra
practice time to help prepare for Nationals. We believe in participating because of the rewards to
the players that Nationals can give. |

| THANKS TO THE COACHES |
|
We admire the dedication and commitment shown by the parents so that their daughters could play
for Fencor this past year. And the players are the ones that put themselves on the line to succeed
and fail at all the games and tournaments and we respect their energy and hard work. But the
motivation of parents' and players is easy to understand. The coaches, on the other hand, are
motivated by a love of the game, an opportunity to share that passion for the game, and a chance to
make an impact on a team and some young players. We applaud that approach and join with the parents
and players in a heartfelt appreciation for the time and caring each coach brought to his or her
team. Fencor continues to be known for having the best group of coaches and we have the people
listed below to thank for that. |

Soon there will be a link up for those that wish to purchase Fencor clothing.
We've done this because we receive a lot of requests for items during the year -
especially around Christmas. That link will include pictures and the nuts and bolts
of ordering. Just expect 3 weeks between ordering and delivery. |
| Coaches Corner - Watching, Waiting, & Working Out |
| It's a hot August afternoon and you have to choose between a workout on ball handling, shooting, and conditioning or a trip to the air-conditioned mall with friends in hopes to see clothes you won't buy or see boys that you won't like after you get to know them or a third option of swimming in the neighbor's pool that will accomplish two goals- one, work on a tan that doesn't need work and second give you something to do to avoid that workout.
Hmmmm! Decisions, decisions! If your coach was watching, then what would you do? I'm guessing the workout would jump to the front of the line. Well, he or she isn't watching but… They are waiting. All coaches are waiting for the same kinds of things! |
| |
Waiting to see...
|
- ...which of the players have improved the most.
- ...which players they can make into role players- the ones that don't mind doing the dirty work
without the points
- ...if there will be a defensive stopper show up this year that the coach can just plug in on the
opponent's best offensive threat
- ...the mistake free players that value possessions by handling the ball well enough so the coach
can trust her
- ...who's in the best shape from the first day on, because the coach knows what kind of attitude
that player will bring to practice every day.
- ...which new player will show up and not be intimidated by the older players and not be afraid to
play all out all the time.
- ...which players want to rebound, want to get each loose ball, and want to pay the price to get
playing time.
- ...which players have improved that drop step move with her back to the basket or has improved her
consistency on the three pointer.
- ...who shows signs of being a team player by encouraging her teammates and respecting her coaches.
- ...if a leader will show up
|
| It's time to go work out! Good luck! |
